Malcom Floyd of the Chargers was taken off the field on a stretcher after making a catch and getting struck by two Eagles defenders.

The good news is that Floyd's legs were moving immediately after the hit. However, it is clear in the second GIF below that the injury is either to his head or his neck as his head collided with the torso of the defender.

Here are two GIFs of the hit (you can see the full video below):

Here is the reverse angle that shows the moment of impact:

E.J. Manuel led the Bills to their first win of the season with a touchdown pass with just two seconds remaining. After the touchdown, the rookie appeared to fight back tears on the field.

The touchdown came at the end of an 80-yard drive that started with just 90 seconds left in the game. After a pass interference call and a scramble, Manuel found Stevie Johnson wide open in the back of the endzone after the defenders got crossed-up. Here is the video:

Buffalo Bills Twitter Account Had No Idea The Bills Had Just Won The Game

The Buffalo Bills completed a great comeback when rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel threw a touchdown pass with just two seconds remaining. But somehow the Bills official Twitter account didn't realize that the Bills were only down by six points when the touchdown was scored.

The touchdown itself tied the game and once the extra point was kicked the Bills took the lead. But when the kick was good, the Bills twitter account sent out a tweet saying "EXTRA POINT GOOD!! OVERTIME HERE WE GO!"

The tweet was quickly deleted and replaced by one announcing the win. However, here is a screengrab of the tweet via TheScore.com...

The Broncos Intercepted A Key Eli Manning Pass In The Most Improbable Way Possible

In the fourth quarter with the Giants trailing by eight points, Eli Manning threw what looked like a good pass to Rueben Randle only to see the ball end up in the hands of Chris Harris of the Broncos who was standing ten yards away.

A closer look shows that the ball was first deflected by Tony Carter who was covering Randle tightly. The ball then deflected off of Carter's foot into the arms of Harris.

The Broncos would then go on to score two touchdowns in the next four minutes to take a seemingly insurmountable 22-point lead. Here is the interception via CBS Sports...

NFL Teams Think Johnny Manziel Is Undraftable Because He Parties Too Much

Despite torching Alabama for 562 yards on Saturday, Johnny Manziel still has a long way to go to win over NFL scouts.

In his column today, Peter King of SI passed along this note about about what NFL people think of Johnny Football:

"Manziel, in his third year of eligibility at Texas A&M, could declare for the 2014 draft if he wants to come out, which seems likely. (He can also stay in and play the 2014 college season, and 2015 as well.) But Manziel, to many teams right now, would be undraftable because they’re scared of his mood swings and off-field questions. But it only takes one team out of 32 to fall for him. And some team will, unless he self-destructs between today and draft day."

"Mood swings" and "off-field questions" are pretty abstract critiques. But King helped explain what he means by that in a follow-up tweet.

Basically, he says NFL teams think Manziel parties too much:

Manziel's partying habits are well documented. The Internet is full of photos of him having a good time all over North America.

In addition, Manziel's father told ESPN's Wright Thompson that he worried about his son's drinking, and revealed that Johnny saw an alcohol counselor during his Heisman-winning season in 2012.

When Manziel left the Manning Passing Academy early this summer, many speculated that he was hungover— which Manziel has denied.

While Johnny Football appears to party about as much as your average frat boy, NFL teams apparently aren't buying the "he's just a college kid" excuse.

Eagles Coach Chip Kelly Admits That His Super-Fast Offense Backfired In The Final Minutes Yesterday

0
0

chip kelly eagles coachNew Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly put Eagles fans into a state of pure bliss with his up-tempo, no-huddle offense in a big Week One upset of the Washington Redskins.

Yesterday ... not so much.

While the offense was efficient, Philly's defense couldn't get off the field on third down in a last-minute 33-30 loss at home to the San Diego Chargers.

After the game, Kelly admitted that he messed up and probably shouldn't have slowed down his team's feverish pace to milk the clock in the final minutes.

The Eagles were down 30-27 and had the ball on the San Diego 14-yard line with 2:09 left. Since they were virtually guaranteed at least a field goal, they probably should have run down the clock so that they wouldn't give the ball back to the Chargers with enough time to win in regulation.

Instead, Kelly threw the ball three-straight times. The Chargers got the ball back with 1:51 left, drove down the field, and kicked a field goal to win it 33-30.

Kelly took responsibility for it after the game. Here's what he told Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

"I was trying to score; that's all on me, that's my call. I didn't want it to leave it in the hands of, it's a tie ballgame. If you score, you're up four. You got to drive a length of the field to try to score a touchdown. When you look at it in hindsight, maybe we should have bled the clock and not giving them enough time to come down and do it. You learn from those situations.

"But we were trying to score seven, not three. We felt like we had three, and just thought we had the opportunity to put one in there, and we didn't get it. We didn't capitalize."

Fast tempo is the signature element of Kelly's offense. But there are times when the situation calls for a more traditional pace, and it'll be interesting to see how he tweaks his system in those situations as the season goes on.

Trent Richardson Found Out That He Got Traded On The Radio

Ex-Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson says he didn't find out about his shocking trade to the Indianapolis Colts from the team.

Last night he told reporters he first heard the news on the radio.

From ABC5 in Cleveland:

"One of my friends called me he was like 'You got traded.' I was like ‘Man, shut up talking to me get off my phone,’” he said. “I turned on the radio and all of a sudden I heard Cleveland Browns running back has been traded."

“It just hit me in my face,” he said. “I didn’t see it coming.”

Given the immediacy of Twitter and the Internet, it's remarkable that Richardson was able to avoid the news long enough to hear it on the radio.

ESPN's Adam Schefter appears to be the first person to tweet the news. But the teams announced it minutes later, so it's not like the Browns were unprepared for the story to break and didn't have time to tell Richardson he was being traded.

The trade has more to do with the Browns rebuilding than anything to do with Richardson personally. But he says he'll be playing with a chip on his shoulder when he makes his Colts debut on Sunday.

NFL Rule Outlawing Some Throwback Helmets Could Have A Bigger Impact On College Football Teams

0
0

Kansas Football

The NFL created some buzz earlier this week when it turned out a new rule would force some teams to stop wearing throwback uniforms if it required them to use a helmet different than their regular helmet.

But while the new rule only affects a few teams in the NFL for one or two games, it could have an even bigger impact on college football teams that routinely use more than one helmet during the season. Even though the NFL rule has no authority in college, you can be sure the NCAA is just as concerned about concussions and helmet safety.

Paul Lukas of ESPN.com explains the purpose of the rule and who recommended it:

"The NFL's Head, Neck and Spine Committee and the Player Safety Advisory Panel, both of which are independent, unpaid panels that advise the league on safety issues. They felt that it's safer for a player to stick with the same helmet for the entire season because new helmets take time to be broken in properly."

The issue of multiple helmets is even greater in college, where many schools use multiple helmets on a regular basis. Some schools, such as Kansas (above) have as many as five helmets and Oregon seemingly uses a new helmet every week.

Many other schools, such as Notre Dame (below) use alternate helmets once or twice per season.

These wild varieties of helmets are used as a recruiting tool in an effort to appeal to high school football players. But when the NCAA sees the NFL rule, the fear of liability could make these helmets a thing of the past.

NFL Scouts Explain What Makes Johnny Manziel So Good

0
0

johnny manziel texas am

Earlier this week SI's Peter King reported that some NFL teams have deemed Johnny Manziel "undraftable" because of off-field concerns involving his drinking and partying.

But when you take away the non-football issues, NFL people are starting to come around on Johnny Football as a player.

Scouts and commentators who were skeptical on Manziel last year now think he can make it in the pros.

The consensus on Manziel is that his instincts are so good that his weaknesses don't matter as much. He is calm and elusive against the pass rush, he's as fast as Colin Kaepernick, and he has such good balance on the run that he can turn negative plays into positive plays.

He's a natural, to put it another way. Ex-Browns GM Phil Savage told SI this week, "He has eight eyeballs."

The weakest parts of Manziel's game are his height and his arm strength. But there's now a precedent for small QBs succeeding in the NFL (Russell Wilson, Drew Brees), and scouts say his arm strength improved dramatically over the summer.

Here's a sampling of what NFL guys are saying about him.

Nick Saban, who coached the Dolphins before returning to Alabama (via SI):

“I think Johnny’s a unique player. Many people have said about these guys, like [Robert Griffin III], that they’re not really NFL-style quarterbacks. But yet they’re all doing pretty well in the NFL.

“I think when somebody’s as instinctive as [Manziel] is, and as fast as he is, and as athletic as he is, and he’s developing into a pretty good passer—I mean last year he really developed as a passer—I do think he has an NFL future.”

Dave Rang, NFLDraftScout.com analyst (via CBS):

"He's a hair under 6-feet with a narrow body type and only average arm strength, but he is able to be successful due to his athleticism, natural instincts and foot quickness to create on the move. Manziel's best quality is a trait that's tough to quantify: his improvisational skills to keep plays alive and find a way to extend drives."

Another NFL scout (via SI):

"If he’s 6 feet or over, I think he’s definitely going to be a guy who’s draftable, and with the success and production he’s had, shoot, he could be a high pick. I never would have thought that before this season. I thought he was like a 5-10 guy just running around."

Ex-player Bucky Brooks (via NFL.com):

"Manziel is throwing the ball with more zip and velocity this season, while also displaying better accuracy and ball placement on his throws. While he is still at his best when playing in a "sandlot" fashion, he is definitely capable of making enough plays from the pocket to pick apart defenses intent on keeping him within the tackle box. Manziel's ability to string together completions, particularly on pass plays from empty formations, makes him nearly indefensible as a dual-threat playmaker."

An unnamed NFL assistant scouting director (via SI):

"He’s in the toughest conference in the nation, and the production that he’s had in that conference and against the best team in the country [Alabama]—he just dices them up—he made it look easy. That definitely has to be in the equation."

CHART: Scoring Is Down In The NFL Even Though Passing Is Way Up

0
0

Through two weeks, scoring in the NFL is actually down even though passing is way up. If this trend continues, it suggests that it's possible to pass the ball too much.

So far this season, the average NFL game features 511 yards of passing for the two teams combined. That is up 10.5% from a year ago (462.6). At the same time, the average NFL game has just 197 yards rushing per game. That is down 15.0% from 2012.

Despite the increase in passing yards, scoring is actually down from 45.6 pts per game in 2012 to 44.6 points per game this year.

It will be interesting to see how much this adjusts as the season moves along and the weather worsens. But this trend is interesting because traditionally, trends in scoring and passing have closely followed each other. So far that is not the case this year...

Tom Brady isn't the highest-paid in the NFL. He doesn't have that many endorsements either.

But he's easily the league's biggest mainstream celebrity.

He's married to the world's most successful supermodel, and just finished building a $20 million house with a moat.

Brady earned $38 million last year, making him the 11th highest-paid athlete in the world.

Three Sloppy GIFs From The Ugly Eagles-Chiefs Game

0

Thursday Night Football was sloppy again last night. This is officially becoming a trend.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended up beating the Philadelphia Eagles 26-16, but it should have been much more of a blowout. Philly turned the ball over twice in the first four minutes of the game, and five times total.

Kansas City's offense did the absolute bare minimum with those turnovers. They settled for five field goals, went 6-18 on third down, and barely threw the ball over 10 yards in the air.

The awesome Chiefs defense was the lone bright spot in the game, but even that was obscured by the penetrating ineptitude of Michael Vick, who finished 13-for-31 for 207 yards, with two INTs and five sacks.

Last week's Thursday game between the Patriots and Jets was gross as well. Maybe it's not such a great idea to make NFL players play two games in four days?

The Cleveland Browns May Be Able To Draft Both Jadeveon Clowney And Johnny Manziel

0
0

Johnny Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney

The Cleveland Browns made a big splash when they traded Trent Richardson to the Colts for a first-round draft pick. But they may just be preparing for an even bigger splash if they are able to draft two of the most exciting players in college football.

If the Browns are tanking the season and the Colts finish in the middle of the pack as many are predicting, the Browns may end up in perfect position to draft both Jadeveon Clowney and Johnny Manziel.

Depending on how Clowney responds to off-season surgery and how desperate other teams are to draft Teddy Bridgewater, Clowney should be available to the Browns if they have one of the top three picks.

In addition, Mel Kiper Jr. has Manziel as the 25th best prospect in next year's draft and will be just the fourth or fifth best quarterback prospect depending on which underclassmen are available. This suggests that the Heisman-winning quarterback would be available to the Browns if their second pick is in the range of 15-20.

Drafting Clowney along with Manziel would also be a very smart and typical move for a team with two first-round picks. The Browns would be getting one player (Clowney) that is deemed a can't-miss prospect that can be a difference-maker right away. They would then have the freedom to take a chance on a riskier player (Manziel) without placing the entire success off the draft on his shoulders.

The Browns would also be getting first-round talent on both sides of the ball and at two of the most important positions on the field.

A lot of people didn't like that the Browns traded Richardson. But they will probably change their mind if Cleveland can draft both Clowney and Manziel.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI and possession of marijuana after a single-car accident in San Jose this morning.

The alleged incident occurred around 7 a.m. this morning, police told Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. He allegedly failed a breathalyzer test after the accident.

This is Smith's third high-profile incident in the last two years. He was stabbed after a melee erupted at a party at his house last year, and two other people were also shot.

In January of 2012, he was arrested and charged with a DUI in Miami.

Smith is 23-years old. He was the seventh overall pick in the 2011 Draft, and has turned into one of the best pass rushers in the NFL.

The 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
